1936 SCHLESINGER AIR RACE COVER unstamped cover addressed to Cleveland, Transvaal, manuscript "By Scott and Guthrie / Vega Gull" at top, two clear signatures of pilots on reverse alongside Johannesburg 1.10.36 arrival mark, "T" tax mark on front crossed out and "Deliver Free" added, accompanied by original letter on "H.M.S. Furious" headed notepaper, message reads "Someone has offered to get a letter returned to Jo'burg for me by one of its airmail planes." The air race was run in conjunction with the 1936 Empire Exhibition, leaving Portsmouth on 29th September. Of the nine competitors, only Scott & Guthrie completed the 6,300 mile route to Cape Town in a time of 52 hours, 56 minutes and 48 seconds in a Percival Vega Gull single engine aeroplane. Allegedly Scott stated they carried 25 covers, the June 2007 "Aeroletter" states only two items of mail are recorded from this team. A rare and important item.
