Summary:
The Noble Confraternity of San Francesco is an original and amusing history text based on the unpublished manuscript ‘Genealogie delle XIII Casade’, written during the XIX century by Luigi de Jenner, a triestine historian. Such manuscript is yet an excellent easy-to-read starting point for a research regarding this fascinating blue-blooded Brotherhood, founded on February 2, 1246 in the local convent of the Minorite Fathers of Saint Francis in Trieste.
The thirteen families of the Brotherhood – Argento, Basejo, Belli, Bonomo, Burlo, Cigotti, Giuliani, Leo, Paduini, Peregrini, Petazzi, Stella and Toffani – all of mercantile roots, established themselves definitively in the Hapsburg’s secular and ecclesiastical institutions, rounding their wages with the incomes from commercial activities of their estate products (as salt, olive oil, fruits and wine) or from the rents of their real proprieties, most of them situated in the Carso, Istria and lower Krain (Slovenia).
The author’s scruple was to begin a comparison between the remote protagonists of the Triestine history and the contemporary ones. Pedantic bureaucrats, unfaithful wives, operetta soldiers, warlike bishops and degenerated childs are part of the Daily: it would be really odd if no one once in his life ever had to bother with persons like nobleman Corvo (Crow) de Bonomo, well known during the XIV century as the cuckoo for his mastery in laying his two ‘eggs’ in other people’s love nest, or as the religious Leone Pietro de Leo, faithful not only to the laws of the Gospel, but above all to the flatteries of Bacchus…
